RDAP vs. the WHOIS you might remember
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the structured, JSON-based successor to WHOIS, and is now what registries actually serve these lookups from. For a domain, it typically returns the registrar, registration/expiration/last-updated dates, and the nameservers it's delegated to. For an IP address, it returns the regional internet registry's allocation record instead: which provider or organization that block of addresses was assigned to, and when.
Reading your results
Don't be surprised if the registrant's name, email, and address show as redacted or replaced with the registrar's own contact details. Since GDPR and the ICANN policy changes that followed it, that's the default for the large majority of domain registrations, not a sign the lookup failed. An IP result showing a wide address range rather than a single address is also normal, since registries allocate addresses in blocks (CIDR ranges) to providers, not one at a time.
Common questions
Why don't I see who actually registered the domain? Registrar-level privacy redaction has been the default since 2018 for virtually all registrars operating under ICANN policy. The registrar itself, or a court order, is generally what's needed to get past it. This tool is showing you the same public record anyone else would see.
How is this different from a DNS lookup? Registration data (who administratively owns and manages a domain) and DNS records (what the domain actually points to day to day) are separate systems entirely. A domain can change DNS providers repeatedly without its registration record changing at all.
Why does the IP lookup show a huge range instead of just my address? That's how the address was originally allocated. Registries hand out whole blocks to ISPs and organizations, who then divide them up internally for individual customers.
